Celebrating beauty of life in darkness

Earth Hour 2014. 

 There certainly exist beauty in darkness. The beauty that one sees through the darkness is the beauty most pure in kind . 

When the hour strikes for all lights to be out and for darkness to enter our lives , I sit in my room in complete blackness and see the rest of the world ablaze in brightness and people exhausting their life in mundane activities completely blind to half the world celebrating earth hour 2014 .Shades of yellow and greens and reds stare back at me and I wonder why . 

Perhaps the world needs to know in what kind of danger they are putting themselves, maybe the innumerable documents , seminars , conferences , debates and global meetings , international conventions , presidential speeches crying out loud the issues addressing the world are not enough to indicate the world that the earth is no longer any younger than it used to be . 

Why Should we celebrate earth Hour ?

More than any other country in this entire region , in the entire world , it is us , Maldives which is experiencing the drastic effects of environmental changes and global warming.

A low lying country in almost 1 to 1.5 kilometers above mean sea level ,this beautiful and delicate nation is subject to the rising issue of global warming and the sea level rise which stands as the greatest threat to the very existence of this nation. 

UN report on 2007 says that Maldives may not even exist by the year 2050. 

IPCC report of 2007 explains that the rising sea level poses a looming threat to Maldives, even small increase in sea level are likely to worsen existing environmental challenges on the islands, more than 90 of the inhabited Maldives islands experience annual floods . In 

2007 , a series of swells forced more than 1600 persons from their homes and damage 500 housing units. . 

Moreover , the rising sea level places a risk on the scarce freshwater resources. Transient sea water inundation contaminated these groundwater supplies as well as soils. 

These matters for most Maldivians are out of mind when they are out of sight . The problem is intensified because the country stands on the planets most endangered ecosystem , the coral reefs. The rising tide of sea level lapping at the shore and the rising sea temperature increases the acidity level in the ocean killing and bruising the corals. 

The UN Environmental  Panel has warned that at current rates , sea level would be high enough to make the country uninhabitable by 2100.

Hence the question , why earth hour ?

Marking earth hour is about empowerment , the idea that you as an individual can do something. Something that although may not look at all as if it matters but is actually a step forward , to contribute to something fundamentally important. 

Angus Skinner , MAPP , a profound advocate of positive psychology writes , 

“ whether religiously , we celebrate the birth of Christ and his life , indeed perhaps the promise of life hereafter or to celebrate the turn of season and the coming beauties of spring and autumn, we are celebrating the future” . It is a sort of consilience ; jumping together  and  engaging others in a certain belief , appreciating life in all forms so that understanding is exchanged among  each other , to build a better future, 

Earth hour spokesperson , CEO and co founder of earth hour Global Andy Ridley says that the earth hours mission is three fold 

1. To bring people together through a symbolic hour long event. 

2. To galvanize people into taking action beyond the hour.

3. And to create an interconnected global community sharing the mutual goal of creating a sustainable future for the planet . 

Hence , Celebrating an hour from the 365 days in a year to mark and acknowledge the mother nature , its resources and make aware the entire world of the dangers of digging their own grave on earth perhaps maybe a small debt that you pay for yourself. 

It is pertinent to note here that protection of the environment and sustainability is a concept that exists in all belief system of the world. 

The holy Quran lays down that 

“ Indeed we offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains and they declined to bear it and heard it , but man undertook to bear it , Indeed he was unjust and ignorant”  ( Quran 33:72 ) . 

In Arabic the word for earthling is khalifa , pronounced khaleaf-ah , has to it several meanings. It may mean deputy , guardian , friend , viceroy or stewardship. Humanbeings entrusted with the responsibility of earth has to give it a hug and health check every now and then . 

Further , it may be noted that , that the idea of being successors or stewards resonates in the bible , particularly in exodus and Corinthians . In the well knows Genesis verses the earliest human alive are taught to sow and reap from the fields in order to understand the functionality of earth and be in awe of its beauty , the Torah too instructs the followers with a job description similar to a noble janitor. . 

Thus we know , earth is our home , its the place we are meant to live in and not destroy. Let us all keep our indifferences aside and indulge in a world wide celebration to mark the very existence of earth and the blessing that we live in and to protect the same for the future . In light of the environmental issues and the hazards that are caused by environmental degradation  immediate action has become mandatory and imperative .Even a small act of kindness towards your self is a step you take to a fruitful future.
